St. Paul's Softball Team

Friends,

St. Paul's intends to feild a softball team in the Fall. If you are at all interested, please see fellow YAM, Cliff Hightower, or email him at cliffordhightower AT gmail DOT com (this spelling is to avoid the webcrawling spambots - I hope any human beings out there can figure out how to reach him). Cliff is our contact person with the city league. We hope to have uniforms, fans, etc. But, nothing can happen until we have players. Like all things that we in the Episcopal church do, there is gender equality on our softball team too. That means, male and female YAMs are welcome to participate. As the season unfolds, you will be able to check here for the upcoming game schedule and for picture and results from past games.

Yours in Christ,
Bob

July 4th YAMs Summer Game Day

Greetings friends,

It is time for our biannual boardgame event. On Saturday, July 4th, from 2:00 to 6:30 PM, the YAMs will gather at the Leopold house for a game activity. Please bring your favorite game, or, if you dare (and are able) play one of the games from our large collection. No one need have any outside of the game knowledge to do well at any of our games. We are not really expecting anyone to be at our house for so many hours of straight gaming, but please, drop in when you can and play a game or two. We will have patriotic treats (hot dogs, chips, etc.) for eating and several gaming tables set up. Please email me if you need directions and to RSVP. The cost is FREE. We should be done in plenty of time for everyone to get to a fireworks viewing destination, if you go for that sort of thing.

Yours in Christ,
Bob

2nd Sunday after Pentecost Sermon

Greetings friends,

Lots of folks have commented on the online sermons. Thank you all for your kind words. This is what I preached yesterday.

Here is the Collect and Text:

Keep, O Lord, your household the Church in your steadfast faith and love, that through your grace we may proclaim your truth with boldness, and minister your justice with compassion; for the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

1 Samuel 15:34-16:13
Psalm 20
2 Corinthians 5:6-10, (11-13), 14-17
Mark 4:26-34

Here are the audio files of the Gospel and the Sermon:

Picture from YAMs Movie Day

Greetings friends,

Our last outing - to the movie theater - was loads of fun! A smallish group of us went to see Star Trek at the Bijou - the movies at Hamilton Place looked pretty bleak. I hope that we didn't miss any one. Star Trek was good, though I had hoped for something that might have provided some basis for a moral/theological discussion. This incarnation of Star Trek was less a morality play, set in space, with veiled characters, but an action-packed romp with lots of comic relief. Our whole group enjoyed it for what it was, though. Here is a picture from the outing. Enjoy!

The next YAMs Movie Night (whenever that may be) will have a more carefully scripted start/end/discussion time and the movie (of my selection) will probably be shown at St. Paul's, in our theater - the Yo Room. I hope to see everyone then.

Yours in Christ,
Bob

Sermon from Pentecost

Greetings friends,

Many of you were kind to tell me that you enjoyed my sermon from Sunday. Thanks for that. As usual, I post my sermons in audio format so that they can be enjoyed most anytime.

This is the Collect from the Day of Pentecost:

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Here are the Readings from The Day of Pentecost:

Ezekiel 37:1-14
Psalm 104: 25-35,37
Acts 2:1-21
John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15

Sermon

I hope that you all realize just how formative the trip to the Community Kitchen was for me, as I hope that it was for you. Please consider joining us next time.

Yours in Christ,
Bob

Episcopal Metropolitan Ministries Benefit Jam

Greetings friends,

The following was forwarded to me by ECSET Missioner, The Rev. John Talbird:

"MUSIC BENEFIT FOR METROPOLITAIN MINISTRIES

On Thursday, June 4, at Rhythm & Brews, two well-regarded bands will perform a benefit for the Chattanooga Metropolitan Ministries. The Ministries is an Episcopal organization, supported by the Church, with a primary mission of helping those who are in danger of becoming homeless and those who have already suffered that difficult fate.
The show will be led off by Josh Edwards and the Sloan River Project. Although Josh lived in Chattanooga for many years, he is now based in Northern Virginia, where he joined Sam Hensley to form the Project and from where the band launches tours all over the Southeast. Like Josh and Sam, the Project’s music is mostly acoustic folk/rock, in the singer/songwriter tradition of tunes with strong personal stories and messages. For this show, the Project will be joined on bass guitar by Father Bob Leopold, of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church downtown, and by Steven Hopkins on guitar.
The second half of the show will be Kathy Tugman and DaHouse Band, joined by special guests, Fletcher Bright and David Walters. This set will combine rock and roll, country, Southern soul and classic jazz tunes. Kathy, known primarily these days for her jazz work with the David Walters Trio, rejoins her friends in DaHouse Band for an energetic and eclectic program that is sure to have the place jumping.
The cost is $10 per person, payable at the door. Thanks to Mike Dougher and Rhythm & Brews, all of the money collected will go to the Ministries. The show begins at 7. Doors open at 6. The venue, located at 221 Market Street downtown, will be non-smoking."

I will be there, actually as the bass player for both bands. I am able to fill in for each respective band's bassist - it should be fun and it goes to a great cause.

I hope that some of you can come out!

Thanks,
Bob

P.S. Please see the flyer here.

YAMs Movie Day

Greetings friends,

On Saturday, June 13th, the YAMs will meet at St. Paul’s at 3:00 PM. From there we will carpool to Regal Cinemas at Hamilton Place. For what is playing, see here. For those of you who do not know, this movie theater is one that plays a bit older releases for a much discounted price. Who knows what we will see, as the schedule changes week by week, but it will be light fare and, hopefully, fun. The price per ticket is $3, plus anything that you want to spend on food or drinks. Please do not let this be a limiting factor – we want you there, even if you cannot afford the ticket price. We should be back to St. Paul’s no later than 6:00 PM. See you there!

Yours in Christ,
Bob

P.S. If you live considerably closer to the theater, it would be fine for you to meet us there. We don't know what we will see until we get there, however.

P.P.S. This is a change from the previously published date of June 6!

P.P.P.S. Please view the evite here.

P.P.P.P.S. This is getting silly.

P.P.P.P.P.S. I have posted a picture from the event here.
